Where have all the Northern Sheep gone?

In March 2004 Tectra's Sally Hobson, who looks after the Northern Northland, asked the question where have all the Northern sheep gone? This led to her investigating what had been happening in the region.

Between 1990 and 2002 sheep numbers have declined by 60% to 522,000 and now represent approximately 9% of total stock units in Northland, compared with 18% in 1990. The largest decline was in the Kaipara area (69%), followed by the Far North (42%).

Some of the interesting facts Sally discovered were lambs tails had dropped, however lambing percentages had increased.
