Summer courses a hit
Friday, 10 December 2004
Tectra's summer courses are proving to be a hit in the South Island. Central Otago/South Canterbury's Regional Training Coordinator, Ken Fergusson is impressed at how these young people, who have never worked in a wool shed, are determined to master the art of handling sheep and using a handpiece.
Hamish McCulloch of Glenary gets into it!
In the past two weeks Ken has run three crutching and dagging courses and also a wool handling courses - all of them have been full!
Both courses have been specifically designed to provide trainees with skills that are immediately transferable to the working environment. The courses are either two or three days long, costs have been kept to a minimum, $20 for the wool handling course and $30 for the crutching/dagging course and equipment is provided.
Ken says it has been great to watch the progress of the young trainees.
"They are here because they want to be and in a couple of days they are confidently handling animals through to belly crutching and eye wigging."
Ken has also being impressed at the get up and have a go attitude that all the trainees have shown.
"They have all being prepared to listen, learn, have a go and then endeavour to perfect their technique".
A number of the trainees have already found jobs with either rural neighbours and friends.
