Economic Service
Established in 1950, the service was owned equally by the New Zealand Meat
Board (Meat New Zealand) and the New Zealand Wool Board (New Zealand Wool
Group). From October 2002 The Economic Service formally became a group within
Meat and Wool Innovation Limited.
The Meat and Wool Economic Service of New Zealand independent comment draws
heavily on our Sheep and Beef Farm Survey and its direct linkage to farms.
The main services provided by the Meat and Wool Economic Service of New
Zealand are:
- To carry out work for Meat New Zealand and the New Zealand Wool Group.
This is published in regular reports.
- To provide a wide range of information on the meat and wool sector
to individuals, organisations and the government.
- To undertake specific contract work.
The Service's strategic direction is set by a four-person board and its
services are carried out by a staff of fourteen operating out of six different
locations.

Our role is to provide independent, authoritative information and comment
on the Meat and Wool Sector along with sector forecasts.
The independent information is built from the Service's annual Survey of
Sheep and Beef Farms that has been published since 1958-59.
Farmers, advisers, banks, investors, exporters and companies that add value
to farm production will find a wealth of hard data on this site. Other groups
that will benefit from this site include the media, universities, government
departments and libraries.
Existing and potential clients can gain a better understanding of the Economic
