Shearing courses

Learner Shearing Courses

  • Learner shearing courses are four day courses.
  • Previous experience is an advantage but is not essential.
  • Learners are required to provide own gear, transport and lunches.
  • The course fee is NZD $100 and includes the Shearing Handbook.
  • Overseas trainees or those funded by other providers including WINZ NZD $170.
  • Fees are to be paid prior to, or at the commencement of, the course.

Level 2, 3, 4 (Adv) Shearing Courses

  • NZD $120 for New Zealand trainees
  • NZD $320 for overseas trainees or those funded by other providers including WINZ
  • NZD $50 for competition courses
  • Fees are to be paid at least 10 days prior to course starting date.

Course Criteria

Meat and Wool Innovation shearing courses are subject to the following requirements:

  • Level 4 (Snr) - shearing approximately 250 or more per day
  • Level 3 (Int) - shearing approximately 150 – 200 per day
  • Level 2 (Jnr) - shearing approximately 50 – 150 per day

Please Note:

All June and July courses will be using "winter combs." Spline drives are compulsory.

The Level 2 course is not for raw novices. These trainees should receive their initial instruction from their local Regional Training Co-ordinator (courses arranged by Federated Farmers or local contacts in each district) or should be capable of shearing 50 – 100 sheep per day.
